  • Shoulder: March, quieter, and the weather is less of a sure thing
  • Skip: April to December

Planning a specific month? JanuaryFebruary

Agasthyakoodam (Athirumala) season by season

Winter December to February Prime time

Jan-Feb is the only real window: the Bonacaud gate opens around mid January on a capped daily permit, the ridge is dry and Athirumala camp drops to 10 C.

Summer March to May Shoulder

Early March closes the season, usually around the 10th; after that the gate shuts and the whole Agasthyavanam sanctuary is off limits to walkers.

Monsoon June to September Do not go

Jun-Sep the sanctuary is closed outright, the Karamana streams run chest deep and the Bonacaud road is a landslide track. Nothing to do here.

Autumn October to November Do not go

Oct-Nov the gate stays shut through the second rains, so this is when you book the January slot online, not when you travel to it.
